You do better work. They still show up first.
This is one of the most common frustrations we hear: you know your work is as good as (or better than) the painter and decorator who always appears above you on Google. It doesn't feel fair, and it isn't about who's better at the job — Google can't assess paintwork. It can only assess signals. Whoever sends the clearest, strongest signals wins the spot, regardless of who'd actually do the better job.
What Google is actually looking at
Four things drive Map Pack position, roughly in order of impact: how complete and active the Google Business Profile is (categories, services, photos, posts); the volume and recency of reviews; how well the website's content matches the search (a page that clearly says "painter and decorator in Bath" beats a vague homepage every time); and consistency of your business name, address and phone number across the web. Proximity to the searcher matters too, but it's the one factor you can't change - the other three, you can.
Notice what's not on that list: how long you've been trading, how good your actual work is, or how many word-of-mouth referrals you get. None of that is visible to Google unless it's reflected in your profile, your reviews, and your website.
This is fixable, and quickly
Jay at New Decorating had no website and no Google Business Profile at all - meaning every competitor with even a basic profile was automatically ahead of him. Once we built his site and set up his profile properly, he was ranking Top 3 in the Map Pack for "exterior painter Bath" within a week. The competitor who'd been showing up first the whole time hadn't done anything differently - Jay simply went from sending no signals to sending strong ones.
That's the part worth understanding: your competitor being above you usually isn't because they're unbeatable. It's because right now, on the four things Google actually measures, they're doing more than you are.
A quick check you can do right now
Search your own trade and area on Google, and open your competitor's Google Business Profile next to yours. Compare: how many reviews do they have, and how recent are they? Do they have a website, and does its homepage say what they do and where? Are their categories and services filled in properly? Nine times out of ten, the gap is somewhere in that list - not in the quality of their painting.
