Why It's Easier to Rank in Keynsham Than Bath
Smaller towns like Keynsham are usually easier to rank in than Bath or Bristol. Here is why, and what a local tradesperson can do about it.
The quiet advantage of a smaller town
Most tradespeople assume the winners on Google are the big names in the big places. Search "plumber Bath" and you'll see why: dozens of established firms, hundreds of reviews each, years of history. Fighting that as a one-van business is hard going. But step a few miles out to somewhere like Keynsham and the picture changes completely. We're based here, so we see it every day: plenty of people searching for local trades, and surprisingly few tradespeople who have bothered to show up properly online.
Why smaller towns are easier to rank in
Google's local results are built around three things: how close the business is to the person searching, how relevant it looks for what they typed, and how well known and trusted it appears (reviews are a big part of that). In a city, hundreds of businesses can all claim to be close and relevant, so the winners are decided by who has the most reviews and the strongest history. In a town like Keynsham, only a handful of firms are properly set up. If you do the basics well, you can be in the top three without having to out-muscle anyone.
That isn't just theory. Peachy Cleans, a cleaning business in Midsomer Norton, had 1,967 views on its Google Business Profile between June and November 2026, and 297 website clicks from it. Midsomer Norton isn't Keynsham, but it works on exactly the same principle: a smaller town, less competition, and a business that took the trouble to show up properly. What actually works
There's no secret trick. Doing well in a town like Keynsham comes down to a handful of ordinary things, done consistently.
1. They've set up their Google Business Profile properly
It sounds basic, but a surprising number of profiles are half finished: the wrong main category, no services listed, a single blurry photo, opening hours that don't match reality. The winners choose the right primary category (for example "Electrician" rather than something vague), add every service they offer, upload real photos of real jobs, and keep their details accurate.
2. They name the town on their website
A homepage that just says "quality plumbing services" gives Google very little to work with. A page that says you're a plumber in Keynsham, lists the streets and nearby villages you cover, and shows a couple of recent local jobs tells Google exactly when to show you. It also reassures the customer that you're genuinely local - which matters, because most people would rather call the firm round the corner.
3. They collect reviews that say something
You don't need hundreds. In a smaller town, ten or fifteen recent, genuine reviews can put you ahead of firms with many more but older ones. The best reviews mention the job and the place: "replaced our boiler in Keynsham, tidy and on time". Ask every happy customer, ideally while you're still on the doorstep or by sending a text with a direct link the same day.
4. They keep it fresh
A profile that gets a new photo or a fresh review every few weeks looks alive. One that hasn't changed since 2022 looks forgotten. You don't need to spend hours on it - ten minutes after a job is plenty.
Where to start this week
Start with the free stuff. Search your own trade plus your town on your phone and look at who comes up. Open your Google Business Profile and check the category, services and photos. Then ask your last five customers for a review. None of that costs anything, and it's the same groundwork the businesses already winning have done.
If you'd rather have it done for you, that's what we do. We're a Keynsham agency building websites and managing Google Business Profiles for local tradespeople, and we'll give you an honest free SEO audit showing where you stand against the other firms in your area and what's holding you back. No hard sell - just a clear picture of what to fix first.

FAQs
Common questions
Is it really easier to rank in Keynsham than in Bath?
Generally, yes. Bath has far more established tradespeople competing for the same searches, many with years of reviews. In Keynsham and similar towns fewer firms have a properly set up Google profile and website, so doing the basics well can put you near the top much faster.
How many Google reviews do I need to compete in a smaller town?
There is no magic number, but ten to fifteen recent, genuine reviews that mention the job and the area are often enough to compete in a smaller town. Recent and specific matters more than a large total of old, vague ones.
Do I need a website, or is a Google Business Profile enough?
A profile gets you started, but a website that names your town, lists your services and shows real local work gives Google and customers much more to trust. The two work best together.
How long does it take to see results?
It varies, but in less competitive towns improvements to your profile and reviews can show within weeks rather than months. Results depend on how many other firms are actively working on their own listings.
